Why are good orthodontic records essential for that perfect smile?

The answer lies in the meticulous process that orthodontists and dentists follow to ensure the best results. Today, we delve into this intricate procedure, step by step, for a comprehensive understanding of the art and science behind orthodontics.

Consider this scenario. A new patient walks into the clinic, and the first step is to gather as much information as possible about their dental structure. This involves using X-rays or Cone Beam Computed Tomography, commonly known as CBCT. These imaging techniques provide a detailed view of the patient’s teeth, jaw, and soft tissues, and act as a guide for the treatment plan.

But, not all information can be gleaned from X-rays and CBCT. That’s where clinical photos come into play. As soon as the patient steps into the operating room, the staff should capture eight specific photos. These include three extra-oral photos: one with the face at rest, another with a smile, and a profile lateral photo. The key here is to capture the entire face in steady shots.

The journey continues inside the mouth with intra-oral photos. Using cheek retractors, the staff should capture a frontal photo of the teeth in centric relation, followed by two side photos, one each from the right and left. The aim is to be as perpendicular to the teeth as possible for a thorough analysis of the canines and molars relationship.

The next step is to capture occlusal upper and lower shots, with the patient in a fully reclined position. Using mirrors, if available, can aid in getting the best shots.

Now All Records are Collected. Whats Next?

Once all these records have been collected, it’s time to take a digital impression of the patient’s mouth. An intra-oral scan provides a detailed 3D model of the patient’s teeth and gums, which is crucial in designing the right appliance or aligners. It’s important to capture at least two to five millimeters of the adjacent tissues for the most accurate results.

This comprehensive process lays the foundation for effective orthodontic treatment. Using state-of-the-art technology and a meticulous approach, orthodontists can diagnose and treat a wide range of dental issues, helping patients achieve their best smile.

If there are any questions about the process or the techniques involved, remember, help is just a call away.
